  These days going through airport security is all long lines, bare feet, bursting Ziplocs and hastily chugged water bottles, but on January 26, 1973, this traveler turned the checkpoint into her personal runway. “Each passenger going through the TWA security tunnel at La Guardia Airport has his — or her — own style,” #nytimes reported. The new “anti-hijacking measures” had been put in place earlier that year. Metal detectors were set up at the entrance to the passenger concourses and staffed largely by “college students, who responded to newspaper ads for jobs that pay between $4 and $5 an hour,” The Times reported. Our photographer Eddie Hausner snapped this photo a few weeks after the new protocol was initiated, and officials told The Times the procedures had yet to cause any significant delays and that customers had been understanding. “I don’t like it, but I guess we have to live with it,” Howland Sargeant told The Times. “Call it a necessary evil.” #nytarchives #EddieHausner
