Peak travel during the pandemic came the Monday after Memorial Day, with just over 340,000 clearing TSA security checkpoints. Numbers dipped again after that, but Thursday and Friday were back over 320,000.
Those are small number compared to a year ago, when we’d consistently see 2 million to 2.8 million passengers daily, but a long way up from the 87,500 passengers screened at bottom April 14.
By late March American Airlines had closed its Admirals Clubs, leaving just travel assistance staff at some major hub clubs for members.
That came after several rounds of closures, and adjustments to service levels – in some cases offering packages snacks to go, in other cases packaged snacks that could only be eaten on premises, and in other locations no alcohol served – all as a result of a patchwork of new regulations in the face of the novel coronavirus.
With passengers coming back, states opening up and rolling back regulations (that had affected the operation of Admirals Clubs), I’m hearing that several clubs are on the verge of re-opening although I’m not yet certain what the service or distancing standards may look like.
I’ve been consistently hearing from American Airlines employees that several Admirals Clubs are expected to open in June. I’ve heard about major hub clubs, and the dates being offered are late in the month, starting with June 22. I expect to see two clubs in Dallas re-open (out of the total five), the A and C clubs, and I expect other clubs such as Philadelphia and Phoenix may open as well.

Asked about what I’ve been hearing, an American Airlines spokesperson offered “We hope to have more information to share this week.”
I don’t expect Flagship lounges to re-open as quickly. Domestic leisure travel is returning before international business travel. And airline President Robert Isom said mid-month that Flagship lounges won’t be back until demand returns.
Great news. Will be able to visit by parents again in PHL by the end of June so having the PHX and PHL clubs open again will be fantastic. Good to see “normal” coming back.
