American Employee Drove an Airline Van Off the Parking Garage in Miami

An American Airlines employee drove a company van off a fourth floor parking garage at the Miami airport on Friday morning.

The 59 year old man landed the van on the concrete below upside down, but wasn’t seriously injured. He was wearing his seat belt.

According to an airline spokesperson,

At approximately 8:19 a.m., an American Airlines team member was involved in a motor vehicle accident at Miami International Airport. Our colleague sustained minor injuries, but out of an abundance of caution, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. We appreciate the assistance of the Miami-Dade Police Department and the other first responders who quickly took care of our team member. The details of how this accident occurred is still under investigation

Here’s the van, you can watch it get towed away. It’s still not clear why the employee drove off the parking deck.

  1. Hope this driver is OK, meanwhile AA needs to give their spokespeople some training in subject-verb agreement.

“The details of how this accident occurred is [sic] still under investigation”

  2. Indeed, AA needs to get with the program – the correct wording for Miami is Los detalles de cómo ocurrió este accidente aún están bajo investigación. Good thing the van was not filled with illegal tanks of gasoline, money laundered gold, or bales of our favorite export or the poor driver might have been seriously hurt.

  3. Obviously he wasn’t looking (i.e., playing with his cell phone or otherwise distracted). I’ll be the first to admit that parking garages can be confusing but I’ve never come close to driving off of one.

Not to mention that unless this was his first day driving there, he should be familiar with the garage.

  4. He wrecks a $20,000 ++ van driving it off a 4th floor parking garage ?? Every garage I’ve been in has a concrete barrier wall making that impossible, unless you go through 10 inches of concrete. I think his job is toast.

Maybe all there was there was steel cable, or maybe just some rope ?? If so, what idiot designed this facility ??
