Just a few days ago I wrote about the steps that were necessary in order to book Cathay Pacific business class awards since they weren’t appearing available at all to partner airlines like American or Alaska.
There’s good news now, though.

VietJet’s CEO became Southeast Asia’s first self-made female billionaire. The airline is a discount carrier flying narrowbody aircraft mostly domestically although with several routes now into Asia.
They’ve branded themselves the bikini airline. And the airline’s CEO sees the campaigns and onboard stunts as empowering. Vietnam has a very conservative culture, and the public bikini stunts rebel against traditional notions of female dress in that society.

Americans generally are against allowing inflight use of cell phones. They don’t want to be trapped listening to their seat opponent yap. However opinion on this may be shifting. A new survey shows that nearly half of Americans want to allow it.

This is going to be a fairly technical post but I’ll do my best to explain it simply. There have been plenty of reader concerns the last few weeks that Cathay Pacific no longer offers business class award space to American AAdvantage or Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members. It turns out there’s just a trick to find and book the space.

Perhaps most notable to me is that Pakistan International Airlines flies London Heathrow – Lahore non-stop three times a week, flies London – Karachi (and on to Lahore) and offers connections from various cities in Europe — in addition to flying Abu Dhabi – Lahore.
Yet the former Prime Minister of Pakistan chose not to fly PIA for his return to the country, preferring Etihad’s business class instead. No doubt he’s well aware that PIA is the worst airline in the world. If you’re going to get arrested, you want to be well-rested.

Singapore Airlines has loaded their new Los Angeles – Singapore non-stop into the schedule. It’s bookable, and business class awards are wide open with 2 seats available on most flights in both directions. Hurry because that won’t last.

There’s been a lot of speculation about what Singapore Airlines would do with its extra Airbus A350ULR (ultra long range) capacity beyond a daily Newark and Los Angeles flight. And the answer is additional Los Angeles flying and additional San Francisco flying. San Francisco will not only have 2 United non-stops to Singapore and a Singapore Airlines non-stop to Singapore, they’ll have a second non-daily Singapore Airlines flight as well.

I was sort of excited to be flying a widebody aircraft on such a short hop. The 1100 mile flight would take us about two and a half hours. On the other hand the Boeing 787 we’d be flying had JAL’s old business class seats. They ordered the planes so long ago, and deliveries were delayed so long, that they debuted angled business seats. They’ve been putting in their new business, but it makes sense to put the older product on a regional route.
Still within Asia customers in a premium cabin are used to a much better product than Americans are.
