American Airlines will replace its current 7,000 square foot Nashville Admirals Club with a new 17,400 square foot lounge, with outdoor terraces.
American Airlines just announced plans for a new 12,000+ square foot Admirals Club at Austin-Bergstrom, and it’s not just bigger — it will be the carrier’s first lounge with an outdoor terrace. The club will sit on the west side of the terminal, right where American’s gates are concentrated, and the airline says it will offer elevated design, full kitchen facilities, and views of downtown Austin and the airfield.

Plans for a Charlotte Flagship lounge are a long time in coming, but the delay may ultimately be worthwhile because the new design template now seen in Philadelphia is so much nicer than the existing business class lounges.
I did manage to find some place to sit in the dining area when I first arrived there, or so I thought. There was an empty table, so I put my belongings down and went to check out the buffet. But when I returned a couple of minutes later, my bag had been moved by a man probably in his 70’s. He began to stand aggressively and told me he was sitting there “he just didn’t leave any bags to mark the spot.”
American Airlines takes precautions to save money on food in its lounges. They want to make sure that customers eat less, or at least take less. And they do this with very small plates.
American is promoting new food and beverage choices in their clubs, new first class domestic breakfasts, and pre-order burger and fries up front.
Here’s a dog standing up on the furniture at the American Airlines Admirals Club in Los Angeles. Since customer provisions there lag what United and Delta offer at their clubs, this dog is presumably eating and drinking there just as well as the passengers.
It appears these issues were written up in August, though they’re just now coming to light. Fortunately this club’s kitchen is undergoing renovation and it does seem as though those things could be connected – or at least they’re a fortunate coincidence.
It seems worth noting that the plan that American Airlines announced for a new 15,000 square foot lounge near gate 14 three years ago is not happening.
They’re still getting a new lounge, despite pulling back significantly in Austin and eliminating around two-thirds of destinations served. But it won’t be as large, and it will be in a different space.
