American Airlines is evaluating new business class seats, expected to debut in 2023. The new business class will have doors. They’re looking at one from their current seat provider, Rockwell Collins, and they’re looking at the Adient Ascent seat (a joint venture between auto seatmaker Adient and Boeing).
What seemed confusing is that in the seat focus groups last week American was actually showing four business class seats.
I’ve written about American’s process for selecting a new business class seat to debut on the Boeing 787-9s slated for delivery beginning in 2023. I’ve argued that the most likely seat is their current Super Diamond seat, adding doors. And a second option – the Adient Ascent seat – leaked.
However it seems that people who are part of customer focus groups looking at American’s new seat options are reporting that there are actually 3 seats under consideration, and some may even be suggesting they’ve been shown four seats.
American is looking at installing a new business class seat. The timing is expected to coincide with the arrival of new Boeing 787-9 planes into the fleet in three years. They’re focus grouping two options now.
I recently wrote that I believed the seat they would choose is the current Super Diamond seat they’ve been using, with doors added. We now also know the second option they’re considering.
American Airlines is testing new business class seats. This week they’re even testing new coach and premium economy seats with customers. Next week they’ll test new seat options for business class. And once that happens the leaks will, presumably, start pouring out.
However we don’t need to wait for leaked word on the seats American is trialing to know not just what they’re considering but to make a strong educated guess about the seat they will actually select.
New Boeing 787-8 aircraft that will start coming into the fleet this year will have “an enhanced version of the Collins Super Diamond seat” which means that center seats will come with privacy dividers.
When American likely introduces a new business class seat in 2023 with the delivery of Boeing 787-9 aircraft, those business class seats (which have not yet been finalized) are likely to come with doors.
Thai Airways pulled out a tape measure when the women checked in at the Bangkok airport. “She then pulled out a measuring tape and wrapped it around my daughter..moving her arms outstretched, before trying to do the same to me and [my other daughter]” the mother said.

Some people feel though that if a passenger doesn’t want their premium cabin seat it should go to the next person on the upgrade list.
The AAVacations.com website is selling Paris business class roundtrips super cheap. These are available non-stop on American Airlines from several cities such as New York and Miami. These are also available connecting from many more cities including Los Angeles, Boston, and elsewhere. British Airways flights via Heathrow are also available.
Dubai-based Emirates Airlines was the first airline in the world to put showers in international first class. Even though Etihad, whose home airport is a mere 72 miles away in Abu Dhabi, added showers to their Airbus A380s the Emirates shower suite remains the gold standard.
They also installed a bar at the back of business class. They’re hardly the first airline to do this, but they dedicated significant real estate to the bar. It’s tended throughout the flight, there are snacks and good libations on offer.
The new Aeroflot business class has been revealed. Aeroflot’s Airbus A350’s will feature new business class suites with doors. Aeroflot is a partner of Delta, and member of SkyTeam.
