A woman and her travel companion were removed from Air New Zealand flight NZ424 from Wellington to Auckland for refusing to watch the airline’s safety video.

The woman was first reading a book and then looking at her phone. When the pilot announced they’d be returning to the gate, though, the woman did start talking on her phone — she “loudly tried to make a booking with Jetstar.”

In our post-9/11 world airlines have quickly turned customer service problems into law enforcement problems. A customer creating a “disturbance” might really be creating a “distraction” for bad people to do bad things. It doesn’t matter how unlikely this is, especially prior to departure while still on the ground. The culture of precaution and ‘not being too careful’ has granted huge deference to the judgments flight crews make in the instant. And it’s allowed prejudice and ego to trump good sense.

In February a man downed 4 bottles of Stella Artois at London’s Gatwick airport before a 9 a.m. easyJet flight to Egypt for his honeymoon.

He responded to the flight attendant’s instruction with a homophobic outburst — before “knock[ing] out one of the cabin crew..with two punches” and sending him to the ground and then proceeding to attack a second flight attendant who responded to the situation. He’ll be spending 7 months in jail, will his new spouse wait for him?

For reasons I’ve never quite been able to fathom there’s a long history of naked passengers in airports. And yet Naked-Air somehow didn’t succeed.

This past Saturday a 38-year-old man tried to travel to Simferopol International Airport in Crimea on Ural Airlines flight 525 from Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport wearing nothing at all.

The man argued he had a perfectly valid reason for flying naked: he yelled that “clothing impairs the aerodynamics of the body” and that he flies “with more agility when undressed.”
