American Airlines Dominates U.S. Summer Travel – United Leads Across The Atlantic

Jul 09 2024

Data from Aviation analytics company Cirium shows that American Airlines offers the most seats of any airline this summer. Using schedule data for this month, they edge out Southwest Airlines as the largest carrier by the measure. Both American and Southwest have a heavily domestic-focused network, and don’t fly their seats as far as United Airlines (or Delta).

Overall domestic scheduled seats are up 6% year-over-year despite aircraft delivery delays, especially by Boeing. Seats are up 7.8% across the Atlantic this month with Delta just a hair’s breadth behind United Airlines.

Southwest Airlines Nightmare: Plummeting Revenue And CEO’s Job at Risk, Activist Investor Plans Takeover

Jul 09 2024

If there was doubt change at the airline was necessary, there’d be a role for Elliott Capital. If Elliott Capital had a vision for how to fix things, there might be as well. Here they just make the case that change is necessary, and ask for their people to be put in charge saying they’ll figure out what the plan is later.

So when they say they’ll “move expeditiously to give shareholders a direct say on the necessary leadership changes” they’re planning a proxy fight, putting their board members in place. But towards what end, besides firing current board members they replace as well as the CEO? The problem here is the lack of a solution!

Southwest Airlines Goes To War Against Elliott Capital, Adopts “Poison Pill” To Fend Off Takeover

Jul 03 2024

Elliott Capital took nearly a $2 billion stake in Southwest Airlines. They are seeking to replace top management and turn the airline into something closer to major competitors like American and JetBlue by charging for bags and creating basic economy fares.

To fend off Elliott Capital from gaining a controlling stake in the carrier, the airline has adopted a ‘shareholder rights plan’ – also known as a ‘poison pill’.

Ugh: Southwest Airlines Revenue Projections Plummet, Problems Worse Than We Thought

Jun 26 2024

We’re mere days away from the end of the second quarter, and Southwest Airlines has filed an SEC 8-K updating its projections of how the quarter will go. Things are bloody. Their previous ‘worst case scenario’ was projecting a 3.5% year-over-year drop in revenue per available seat mile. That’s bad, and a big part of why Southwest is scrambling to change its business model, for instance considering seat assignments and premium seating. But things are worse than they’d previously suggested – a range of down 1.5% – 3.5%. They now say it’ll be down 4% – 4.5%. That’s on increased capacity, where their guidance hasn’t changed. I suppose they can only be thankful for Boeing delivery delays – without which there’d be more capacity and even lower revenue per available seat mile. While they aren’t…

Seat Savers Beware: How Other Passengers Hijack Your Southwest Airlines Strategy

Jun 23 2024

Southwest Airlines doesn’t pre-assign seats. Once you board you can take any open seat. There’s no rule against saving seats for other passengers. And it’s perfectly acceptable to subtly discourage other passengers from sitting beside you, though if they want to take the empty seat next to you they can. In this Hunger Games world of Southwest Airlines seat selection there’s basic game theory to defend and expand your turf – from saving seats, to boarding early, and figuring out whom you may want to sit next to you (if someone has to).

Southwest CEO Out? Rumor His Replacement Is Imminent

Jun 21 2024

Last week Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said he isn’t resigning, which – outside of an expression of ‘full confidence’ from the Board – is the surest sign his two-year tenure is jeopardy. There’s now growing talk that his departure could be imminent, with current COO and Hawaiian Airlines veteran Andrew Watterson taking over.
