THAI Smile Joining Star Alliance as a Connecting Partner

Jun 01 2019

THAThai Airways has transferred a lot of its domestic and regional flying to THAI Smile, its lower cost subsidiary which operates 20 Airbus A320 aircraft. That makes award travel to many Thai cities problematic, because THAI Smile isn’t a Star Alliance member so miles from United, Aeroplan, LifeMiles and other Star programs don’t allow redemption on THAI Smile flights.

Thai Airways itself no longer operates any narrowbody aircraft.

Thai Airways Plans to Sell Frozen Thai Food So You Can Eat at Home Just Like You Do in the Air

Thai Airways is planning to sell frozen Thai food to consumers mostly under the Royal Orchid Gourmet brand, “new ready-made sauces, basil stir fries and pad Thai via the Eurng Luang brand to the market.”

One of the biggest things I gave up moving from the Washington DC area to Austin is good Thai food like Elephant Jumps in Merrifield and Kao Sarn in the Eden Center. I’m not sure I’d resort to Thai Airways Royal Orchid Gourmet frozen meals, at least unless they offered Thai’s duck rick soup.

Star Alliance program Avianca LifeMiles has a hotel booking site that is really Rocketmiles. And they have a quintuple (5x) miles offer for five hours only.

Five hours limits their exposure, because this is incredibly rich. When they ran triple miles for a single day last month I saw 15,000 miles on a $380 stay. This would yield 25,000 miles for the same stay. It can be like buying miles for what they’re worth and getting hotel stays free.

Two Points Currencies Have 30% Transfer Bonuses to Virgin Atlantic at the Same Time

Virgin Atlantic miles aren’t worth as much as other miles. However they do have strategic uses and I believe the single best one is ANA first class roundtrip from the Central U.S. and East Coast for just 120,000 miles per person. (San Francisco and Los Angeles is just 110,000 miles roundtrip, while business class runs 90,000 or 95,000 miles depending on the city.)

Another strong use of Virgin Atlantic miles is Delta business class between the US and Europe for 50,000 points each way, which becomes an amazing deal witht he 30% tansfer bonus. There are other award chart sweet spots, like Australia and New Zealand.

Thai Airways has myriad inflight products. They’re known for aircraft swaps at the last minute. Although in recent years they’ve tried to rationalize their fleet as part of an effort to stem losses, with the Thai national carrier you never quite know what you’re going to get. One of the things that’s different in the fleet is that the reverse herringbone seat in their Boeing 787-9s. And these seats have seat belts with airbags. They can’t accommodate waists larger than 56 inches, and you cannot add a seat belt extender to them or else the airbag would be misaligned. This size limit also means parents with lap infants can’t sit in these seats. So Thai Airways has banned passengers of a large size and parents with lap infants from the new business class on their…
