First Class Lounge Access Unlocked: Status Match To Enter The World’s Most Luxurious Airport Clubs

Royal Air Maroc status match offer

Airlines want to recruit the best customers of their competitors. Frequent flyer programs – and elite status – is a barrier to do this. Passengers don’t want to give up the benefits they’re used to and start at the bottom with someone else.

So frequent flyer programs will offer to ‘status match’ customers who have status with a competitor, giving them status even if it’s temporary with an opportunity to keep it long-term by moving their business.

Even if you’re not moving your business a status match can be useful. If you’re a United Airlines frequent flyer, the equivalent of United Gold (which is Star Alliance Gold) a partner airline gets you lounge access even on domestic flights.

oneworld status can be even more lucrative. If you’re a British Airways silver you can use American Airlines business class Flagship lounges even on domestic flights. If you’re a BA Gold you can use partner first class lounges, even if you’re flying economy, like Cathay Pacific’s Wing or Pier or Qantas first class lounges.

Right now oneworld member Royal Jordanian has a status match offer – but it’s restricted to residents of specific countries in Europe and the Mideast.

And, brand new, oneworld member Royal Air Maroc now has a status match offer that has no geographic restrictions and that allows matches up to top tier oneworld emerald.

  • Matched status only lasts through June 2024 unless you either take a paid Royal Air Maroc flight and credit it to your Safar Flyer account before then, or have an eligible booking linked to your account on June 30, 2024, in which case status is extended through end of 2024. (I suspect some folks will buy refundable tickets in June and refund them in July?)
  • Matches are expensive: $150 for Silver; $450 for Gold; $1000 for Platinum Lite; $1500 for Platinum Standard.
  • They’ll match hotel programs even to Silver, but that doesn’t get you much. They’ll match a broad array of non-oneworld frequent flyer programs, though only a handful can be matched to Platinum (oneworld emerald) – however this includes Air Canada 75K as well as Super Elite.

Now, if you’re going to do a status match offer with Royal Air Maroc, consider pairing it with a paid double or triple status miles subscription to re-earn and even level up your status faster.

Qantas First Class Lounge Salt And Pepper Squid

In March 2022 Royal Air Maroc offered oneworld sapphire via status match and it was so popular the deal was shut down early. I took advantage of 49 euros for Royal Air Maroc Gold, with the intention of using it for American Airlines Flagship lounge but didn’t leverage it as planned because I then earned American Airlines Concierge Key status which came with Flagship access.

Now that I’m no longer Concierge Key this tempts me a little bit, even at the high price. But I have oneworld emerald already (via American Airlines Executive Platinum) and mere Flagship access for six months is a bit too pricy for me considering I don’t live in a city that has one. If I were in Dallas, Miami, Chicago or LA I’d be pondering more aggressively.

I love oneworld emerald status for partner first class lounge access, though that doesn’t include the British Airways Concorde Room, the joint American-BA Chelsea Lounge at New York JFK, or Qatar’s al Safwa lounge.

Still, this one isn’t for me, but some of you will find value – book a single trip to extend status for all of 2024 – and even do a triple status miles paid subscription in order to keep the status more easily beyond that.

  1. Odd that Air Canada top tier gets their platinum – the only others that do are European close in competitors. Maybe YUL to Casablanca with the French connection is their biggest North America market?

  2. While the Delta meals didnt look appetizing, the pax was in comfort + which is an economy ticket with some more leg room. Delta probably should just make a cold breakfast since that isnt too hard to screw up. Not a fan of serving food with tin foil on it regardless of class.

  3. trying to understand the fine print here. Exec Platinum on AA and Diamond on Delta here. If I use Delta status to get OneWorld Sapphire on RAM (and pay $450), do I get AA Flagship Lounge access when flying AA just by showing RAM credentials while on an AA (biz) ticket? Do you have to credit the mileage to RAM, or can I credit to AA?

  4. No AS and AA?

    @Mark
I accessed Flagship in MIA, DFW, and ORD with my AS FF. AA doesn’t seem to care which FF you enter (contrary to AS).

  5. @Karo,

Our experience matches yours. We have BA Silver (Platinum) and use this to access FL while creating to AA. They don’t have a crediting requirement unlike AS, as you mentioned. We have run into this one as well.

    Cheers.

  6. Greg,

Indeed YUL-Morocco is around because of there being a very concentrated and substantial number of people in Quebec with origins in Francophone parts of Africa — including the Maghreb countries in particular.
