Thieves smashed a jewelry case and stole $800,000 worth of merchandise from the Little Nell hotel in Aspen on Friday. They weren’t even wearing masks. They weren’t caught right away, despite video footage, because apparently their feet didn’t smell badly enough.

At least that seems to be the lesson from a robbery that was foiled quickly on December 19 in Wanzhi, China.

A man named Yang entered a hotel lobby, first removing his shoes so he could avoid making noise as he proceeded through the premises. The hotel owner though smelled the man’s feet from another room according to Wuhu County police.

The man “quickly ran out of the lobby, and the owner chased after him. He was later caught by the owner in the hotel’s car park.”

The perpetrator confessed to police that he had stolen from several other hotels on the same night as well.
