With their best ally — Steve Bannon — gone from the White House, Delta along with American and United have enlisted Newt Gingrich to push for their cause.

North Korean Missile Test Seen By Cathay Pacific San Francisco – Hong Kong Crew
Last Wednesday North Korean tested a ballistic missile. When they test missiles they generally don’t post NOTAMs for flights to avoid designated air space (and it’s not clear that historically they’ve known where the missiles would go).
This time the missile was reportedly seen by the crew of Cathay Pacific CX893 from San Francisco to Hong Kong, the midnight Airbus A350 departure.
Delta Rolled Back Last Night’s Devaluation, Transatlantic Business Class Back to 70,000 Miles
Last night Delta began charging 86,000 miles each way for business class awards between the US and Europe on Delta’s own planes. What’s bizarre — aside from the 23% no notice increase — is that it meant Delta flights were more expensive (by 1000 miles) than flights on partners.
They’ve already rolled back this change.
Review: Korean Air First Class Kosmo Suites Chicago – Seoul
Earlier in the month I needed to be in Singapore. I booked Korean Air first class Houston – Seoul – Singapore for 95,000 points that I had transferred over from Chase.
Unfortunately Korean cancelled their Houston – Seoul flight. They were super accommodating though, and offered to buy me a flight out of Houston to connect to their Chicago flight. Even better I got them to buy me American Airlines first class Austin – Chicago.
Delta Pretty Much Tells China Southern to Kiss Off From SkyTeam (and Will Cathay Pacific Join Star?)
Delta owns a stake in China Eastern, the country’s most subsidized airline giving them a presence in Shanghai especially. They’ve become even more linked, with Delta and China Eastern buying into and taking a board seat with Air France KLM along with Air France KLM taking an ownership stake in 49% Delta-owned Virgin Atlantic.
China Southern based out of Guangzhou has been left as something of a redheaded stepchild in Delta and Air France-driven SkyTeam. And American has gone ahead and invested $200 million in China Southern, giving them their own foothold into mainland China.

China Squeezes North Korea By Suspending Air Service
China is North Korea’s primary sponsor state. But North Korea is also a problem for China. Kim Jong Un’s saber rattling leads to the militarization of South Korean and potential re-arming of Japan, challenging Chinese hegemony in North Asia.
Meanwhile, as the U.S. antagonizes North Korea, if China plays a role containing them they gain prestige on the world stage — equal to or in excess of the United States.

Booking Throwaway Tickets to Reduce the Price of Star Alliance Awards
ANA is a Star Alliance airline based in Japan. For the most part you can use their miles to redeem the same awards you can get with United miles, but they charge fewer miles for those awards. And American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to ANA.
And while ANA does add fuel surcharges to awards, those are very low or non-existent for flights to Japan and North Asia and they don’t add fuel surcharges to awards on Air Canada, Air New Zealand, or Etihad. Yes, they partner with Etihad and other airlines outside of Star Alliance too. Cancelling and redepositing miles costs just 3000 miles (rather than cash).
