Comment Here for a Chance to Win a Samsung Chromebook!

All I’m going to ask you to do is leave a comment, the details of which you’ll need to read on for so you know what to say!

Last month I was at a conference where I walked away with a giveaway item of a Samsung Chromebook — courtesy of Gogo Inflight Internet.

Now, I love Gogo. Inflight internet has materially changed my life. I used to get off of a plane after a long flight during the business day and I’d be inundated with work, with messages, with ‘crises’ (manufactured or otherwise). Instead, I keep up with work from the air. I’m more productive, and landing after a long flight is no longer stressful. I currently pay for a ‘monthly pass’.

But I didn’t want anyone to think I loved Gogo because I received something in a giveaway. (Not that these things go out on the wire services, but bear with me.)

So I figured I would give away the device here. Plus, while it’s the latest and greatest and coolest in technology the Chromebook probably isn’t for me. I desperately want to be a one-device kind of guy. I use a high-end Lenovo Ultrabook. It’s not that much heavier, not that much bigger, than a Chromebook but serves as my desktop and my laptop and my tablet. So why not give it away?

Don’t know what a Samsung Chromebook is? Details here.

A sticker on the outside of the box reads, “Included with this device for 2 years is up to 100MB per month of Mobile Broadband service provided by Verizon Wireless.”

How to enter:

In the comments, answer the question “What is your all-time favorite View from the Wing blog post?” and include a link to that post in your comment.

This will serve two functions:

  • It will help me better understand you (my readers), hopefully giving me relevant feedback on what you value most.
  • It will help to introduce other readers to some of the posts I’ve written that they might enjoy as well.

Here are the rules:

  • You may enter up to once per day — and I give you a bit of slack in this, I won’t disqualify any entry as long as you don’t make more than one entry per calendar day or as long as no entry is closer than 24 hours together from another one. And if you’re close, we’re cool. I’m not looking to disqualify people, just to make sure there’s no massive ballot stuffing.

  • All entries (comments) must be received no later than Thursday, June 20 at 5pm Eastern time.

  • I will draw a winner at random in the days following the close of the contest from those that meet these guidelines. Make sure you provide a valid e-mail address when entering to be eligible to win (you do not need to leave an email address in the comments, but along with your name where it asks for your email that email must be ‘real’ or I will have no way of contacting you).

  • I’m the final arbiter in all matters related to this contest and in all matters of interpretation. There is no appeal. I’m doing this because there’s an opportunity to send out a pretty cool computer, and not taking anything in return, so please don’t give me a hard time in the process.

Any questions? E-mail me. And hopefully the winner will also follow up with me to let me know their impressions of the device. It looks great!

  1. Your trip reports are always my favorite. After reading your over the water 2 bedroom villa at the Conrad Koh Samui, I made it my mission to earn enough points and miles to do this same trip: http://viewfromthewing.com/2011/12/01/conrad-koh-samui-2-bedroom-ocean-pool-villa-burn-avios-burn-cathay-pacific-first-class-and-amazing-conrad-suites/

Seeing your travel and how you do it motivates me to earn miles/points and convert them for once (or twice) in a lifetime trips.

  2. Not sure if this is my favorite post ever but an example of some of my favorite things that you do on this blog. I appreciate when you provide comments/opinion/reactions on other blog items. Example: http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/06/where-did-all-of-the-british-airways-award-seats-go/

I’d guess the majority of us read a number of these mileage/travel blogs so it’s nice to see varying opinions about the same news instead of just the same rehash on every blog.

I am also an Arlington resident, so I love all the local food spots and such.

  3. “Look Up The Creepy Data Mining Profile that Delta Keeps On You” – jan 25, 2013

Even though you may not have been the only one to write about it, this post on the accidental delta data dump was one of my favorites. Provided for some great fun at the office as we deciphered the data.
    http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/01/25/look-up-the-creepy-data-mining-profile-that-delta-keeps-on-you/

It also led to my discovery of Experian’s “Mosaic” which was highly entertaining. See this brochure:

  4. I actually saw a Chrome notebook in operation in a gate area and was totally impressed with the speed that it booted up and how compact it was. The guy let me hold it and then I was really really blown away–this thing is amazingly light!

My favorite story of recent that you published that also really really helped me was about credit card denials. Here is the link:

    http://viewfromthewing.com/2011/12/13/is-it-bad-to-be-rejected-for-a-chase-credit-card-and-how-to-turn-a-rejection-into-an-acceptance/

  5. My favorite post was probably the one where you first stayed in the Presidential Suite at the IC Manila. It was one of the reasons I first wanted to be RA, so I could do the same! Sadly I haven’t made it there yet and have decided not to pursue RA again next year (at least not as an Earned RA) so I may not get there…but will continue to live vicariously through you 🙂

  6. I like the “Bits and Pieces for …” posts. For example “http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/17/bits-n-pieces-for-june-17-2013/

  7. http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/16/big-offer-this-week-only-for-chase-ink-cards-up-to-60000-points/

I like post about credit card chase like. For example, some people do business, personal, and etc… So, for when a credit card bonus or change of benefit changes for flight, it would be nice to know before the deadline. In addition, I like it to associate with American Airline.

Question: “Included with this device for 2 years is up to 100MB per month of Mobile Broadband service provided by Verizon Wireless.”
–What does that mean? Does the chrome have internet inside of it?

In addition, how much for shipping do you know?

  8. I like the post on what to do about a mistake fare. I was able to get in on one and was happy to learn about how I should handle it.

    “http://viewfromthewing.com/2012/07/16/do-not-call-the-airline-or-hotel-during-a-mistake-fare-and-is-there-strength-in-numbers-or-best-to-keep-a-deal-quiet/”

  9. For me one of your best posts was discussing the track it back promotion in 2009 (http://viewfromthewing.com/2009/11/24/us-airways-holiday-big-bonus-up-to-250-bonus-on-shopping-purchases/)
I bought around a million miles using this promotion. As I don’t travel for work it was a great way to obtain a huge number of miles relatively cheaply. It was somewhat stressful spending $7000 on plastic stickers in hopes that the miles would post but it worked like you said it would.

  10. I liked the recent post “Planning an Award Ticket a Year Out? Here’s When Airlines Load Their Schedules”. While I love your trip reports, especially detailed photos of airplane interiors and hotels, I appreciate posts like this one because I LEARN SOMETHING NEW. I was a n00b in that I assumed they loaded at 330 days (or whatever specified amount of time for each airline). WRONG!!
    😉
I gained a whole new perspective on finding award tickets.

    http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/05/22/planning-an-award-ticket-a-year-out-heres-when-airlines-load-their-schedules/

  11. Have learned so much here already! Planning a vaca from PNS to DEN and look forward to reading and learning more!

  13. BBQ!

    http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/04/16/austin-food-culture-and-what-it-taught-me-about-barbecue-and-thai-food/

This and your Lockhart post last year motivated me to sniff out a BBQ joint last Friday near DFW.

We found Hard Eight in Coppell on Yelp, had decent reviews => http://www.hardeightbbq.com/. I am not a connoisseur of good BBQ, but I thought it was excellent – and my brother-in-law rated it just shy of Salt Lick (he lives in Austin).

The brisket and ribs were succulent!

  14. I am a fairly new follower and am just this year going to reach the first tier of MVP on Alaska. There is so much information to weed through and I still have a million questions, but I love receiving these emails to gain new insight. My favorite blog, accordingly was this one regarding frequent flier programs and which ones are best and why. http://viewfromthewing.com/2012/10/22/the-best-awards-each-us-frequent-flyer-program-has-to-offer/

    Thank you so much!

  15. My favorite has been: The Best Awards Each US Frequent Flyer Program Has to Offer. Comprehensive and helpful for figuring out which account to bulk up with for desired destinations. Thanks!

  16. While not the most spectacular or groundbreaking post, this post exemplifies why I like this blog:

    http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/16/big-offer-this-week-only-for-chase-ink-cards-up-to-60000-points/

I subscribe to a bunch of travel blogs, and all of them were stoked about this offer. All of them mentioned the bonuses for cards they had affiliate links to, but yours is the only one to mention the ones that had a bonus but didn’t have an affiliate link to. I appreciate that you offer the full story, even if it doesn’t have an opportunity to monetarily benefit you.

  17. Hyatt Place Delray Beach post or any of your hotel posts since you seem to visit a lot of the same cities I do. Floridahttp://viewfromthewing.com/2012/11/20/theres-no-room-service-my-first-ever-stay-at-a-hyatt-place/

  18. Wow, there are too many to list, but most recently two come to mind:

Bare toes on planes and the limitations of Google wallet

  19. The chase ink bonus since I was going to apply that day. Thanks for the notice.

  20. no, thank you. haven’t you guys heard about prism? yet you still want to move your stuff online

  21. How to make sure you can board the plane when you book a complicated intl. reward tkt!

  22. I have saved the post of the best frequent flyer awards each program has to offer. Helped show me where to use each currency.

    http://viewfromthewing.com/2012/10/22/the-best-awards-each-us-frequent-flyer-program-has-to-offer

I also have the recipe for the lemon poppy seed pancakes saved. Haven’t had a chance to make them yet but I intend to.

  23. Boy, you make this hard. I’ve been following you for so long that it’s hard to choose one post, as so, so, so many are terrific. But, I guess that the Bits ‘n Pieces ALWAYS catch my eye and I read them totally. Thanks so much.

  24. Meridien Airlines Trip Report. When I’m feeling gloomy I pull it up and look at the picture you shot in the cabin bathroom.

  25. Wondering if link is still valid for 35k miles…

Credit card blogs – example http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/02/18/us-airways-mastercard-signup-bonus-changes-for-the-worse-but-how-you-can-still-benefit/

Do you know if this landing page is still valid?
35,000 miles after first purchase, no fee the first year, promise of 10,000 more miles at cardmember renewal in a year. There’s no landing page, but details of the signup bonus and fee waiver are in the terms and conditions of the offer (save those!).

  26. I love your blog because it’s so informative and I always come to it to learn the latest on credit cards. I also enjoy reading your trip reports (more of those, please!). However! I must say that my favorite post is where you shared the recipe for the Andaz pancakes you kept raving about, so that all your readers could taste them too. 🙂 http://viewfromthewing.com/2012/12/31/bring-the-andaz-5th-avenue-home-make-lemon-poppyseed-pancakes-in-your-own-kitchen/

  27. “Using US Airways Miles to Book Star Alliance Awards” I was/am fairly new to this and the post was very relevant to me and well done!

  28. Not sure if this is my favorite post ever but an example of some of my favorite things that you do on this blog. I appreciate when you provide comments/opinion/reactions on other blog items. Example: http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/06/where-did-all-of-the-british-airways-award-seats-go/

  29. Your insights as a seasoned world traveler help me set my expectations regarding things such as checking at hotels. In your “Suites, Treats and Eats” post I learned that Lounge and In-Room check-in existed. I’ve always assumed that the lengthy data entry and photocopy routine at the desk was par for the course unless one was a VIP or celebrity.

  31. Gary, my hands-down favorite was, “United’s Award Routing Rules Make No Sense — And Why That’s a Good Thing” for 2 reasons:

    1) It was the first time (to my knowledge) that you mentioned MileValue, who I think is the “unsung hero” of FF blogs. You gave credit where credit is due, and I admired your classy Hat Tip.

    2) I’ve heard a miracle defined as “a shift in perception,” and your post did create a miracle for me. I was new to the FF scene, and often felt both overwhelmed and frustrated by United’s game that often made no sense, where the players were surly UA agents and snarky FT grumps.

But your post made me realize that I actually didn’t want the orderly, simple UA game that I *thought* I wanted. In fact, I began to see how UA’s chaos was my friend, because if I didn’t understand it all, that means many of UA’s staff also didn’t understand! I began to see how I could patiently “work the chaos” to my advantage, with a lot of creativity, persistence and the poetry of “hang-up, call-back.”

Suddenly I wasn’t pursuing points and deals with a furrowed brow. Rather, it became a fun, challenging puzzle to be solved. My FF hobby went from Kafka-esque to light-hearted, ironic fun that was great fodder for stories.

Thanks to this post, I started to play the system instead of being a victim of it.
    Best,
    David Code

  32. For someone that doesn’t travel that much (less than 30k/year), it’s important to rack up all your miles in one place. I went back and forth over which airline/alliance to go with and your intro page really helped me a lot. So as a novice traveler and a new reader, your intro page was extremely helpful. Thanks.

  33. El bulli, we can all talk about our addiction to collect points. In my view they are there to create memories that will last. Sure this is on the expensive side (and yours tend to be even though you use points) but this is one I would consider doing (sans kids!), if the restaurant still existed. It tells you that opportunities only exist for a finite time and grab it while you can.
    http://viewfromthewing.com/2008/04/19/off-to-roses-and-dinner-at-el-bulli/

  34. I like the “Bits and Pieces for …” posts. For example “http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/17/bits-n-pieces-for-june-17-2013/

  35. My favorite blog post was your review of restaurants around Paris from your New Year’s 2013 trip. I’m taking my wife to Paris next month for our anniversary and her 30th birthday. I’ve taken some of your suggestions and plan to take her to a few of these places. Definitely planning to make a stop at Angelina’s and Laduree!
The Chromebook would be awesome for the flight over!

  36. Preface: I was just going to copy and paste what I wrote previously but I’m going to add that I saw someone referenced bits n pieces. Just wanted to add to this post that I really like that as well. I’m capable of reading and doing some level of interpretation on my own and appreciate just the links directing me to things of interest.

    ——————-
Not sure if this is my favorite post ever but an example of some of my favorite things that you do on this blog. I appreciate when you provide comments/opinion/reactions on other blog items. Example: http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/06/06/where-did-all-of-the-british-airways-award-seats-go/

  37. I really enjoy your blog, your trip reports, your tips for credit cards and spend, but my favorite post is the one where you explained ‘earning 15 million miles from stickers’. I found your blog from your Million Miles Secrets interview, and was totally blown away by your post explaining this. Got me thinking it was time to jump in – small scale, mind you – to signing up for more cc’s. You may inspire many with your aspirational trips, but you just plain old inspired me to get started!

  39. Reader Question: Booking Europe With Low Fuel Surcharges or Domestic US Flights With British Airways Points at http://viewfromthewing.com/2013/05/01/reader-question-booking-europe-with-low-fuel-surcharges-or-domestic-us-flights-with-british-airways-points/ was quite useful. It’s where I learned about Iberia. We will probably end up flying Iberia’s non- stop Los Angeles to Madrid next year using transferred British Air Avios, in order to visit Morocco and Spain.

  40. I love the miles game because it combines my love of travel with finding good deals and optimizing earning and booking strategies. Because of this I’m not as concerned with reports on First Class amenities, but tricks to maximize redemptions! Here are two reports that I saved away for future reference:
